국내 유일의 실험예술축제, 한국실험예술제(KEAF)가 13회째를 맞이해 ‘제주국제실험예술제(JIEAF)’라는 이름으로 서귀포에 새롭게 둥지를 틀었다. 매년 뚜렷한 주제로 진행했던 실험예술제는 2012년부터 ARTROAD PROJECT를 시작했다. 첫해는 ‘바퀴(Wheel)’라는 주제로 자전거와 자동차, 휠체어, 지하철, 횡단보도 등과 같은 변화된 무대를 통해 아트로드의 확장 가능성을 실험하였고, 이듬해는 ‘What is Next?’로 서울과 제주도를 이어가며 ‘현대와 과거’, ‘문명과 자연’, ‘빠름과 느림’에 대한 경험을 예술가에게 제공함으로써 작가 스스로가 의식의 변화와 회귀에 대한 성찰을 실험할 수 있는 장을 마련했다.

 

그리고 올해는 “ Life is Art “  라는 주제를 가지고 서귀포를 배경으로 무대를 풀어가고자 한다. 한국실험예술제가 지난 12년 간 도시의 환경과 특성에 맞게 파격적인 퍼포먼스와 시대를 앞서는 전위적인 퍼포먼스를 중심으로 했다면 2014 제주국제실험예술제(JIEAF)는 지역의 일상공간을 고려한 맞춤형 퍼포먼스 프로그램으로 구성되었다. 서귀포 지역민의 일상 공간인 재래시장과 이중섭거리를 비롯한 곳곳에 예술가가 직접 찾아가는 ‘지역 친화형 프로그램’(맨발 퍼레이드-"신들의 나들이", 재래시장활성화 프로그램- “시장가기 좋은날” , 거리문화활성화 프로그램 “거리에 예술향 만발하고”,  “거리에서 만나는 아시아 마술세상” 등)과 해외 아티스트들과 함께 하는 음악, 미술, 퍼포먼스, 힐링, 치유, 건강과 관련된 다양한 워크숍으로 구성된  ‘지역민 참여형 프로그램’ 을 중심으로 펼쳐진다.    

 

특히, 한국의 최남단이라 할 수 있는 서귀포는 제주도 중에서도 빼어난 풍경과 매우 이국적인 분위기를 동시에 지닌 독특한 지역이다. 그 동안 서귀포는 지역적 한계로 국제적 예술 행사가 전무하다시피 했는데 14개국 이상의 예술가가 참여하는 '제주국제실험예술제(JIEAF)'를 통해 제주도의 아름다운 자연과 문화예술의 다양성을 전 세계에 알릴 수 있는 계기로 삼아 향후 제주(서귀포)를 국제적인 예술, 휴양도시로서의 위상을 만들고 확산시키기 위한 역할을 담당하고자 한다.

 

The Committee of Jeju International Experimental Arts Festival 2014 has the pleasure to resume, the unique art platform in Korea, Jeju International Experimental Arts Festival(Previously Korea Experimental Arts Festival), to be held in Seogwipo, Jeju, Korea.

 

Since 2012, KEAF has been in a series of ARTROAD PROJECT, in the first year, with theme of ‘Wheel’, cars and bicycles, wheelchairs, subway, crosswalk were completely transformed as open stages for some of experimental artists to connect with audiences, and in the second year of the project, we had ‘What is Next?’ in Seoul and Jeju, which provided artists opportunities for more self-exploration and introspection on own act of doing as an artist.

 

The festival offers diverse experimental arts programming in Seogwipo with “Life is Art“. In the past 12 years, KEAF has been an avantgarde festival since beginning on the stages in city, and now JIEAF aims at being the festival based on the nature friendly concept in the local community, which artists from diverse backgrounds will be in collaboration with local artists and organizations. The programs include 'Barefoot Art Parade - The Excursion of Gods', Street performance, Street Magicians and a range of participatory worshops such as butoh, stone art, music & painting, meditative healing therapy etc. for facilitating long-life relationship with the performance arts.            

 

The festival hopes to make a significant contribution to the development of contemporary emerging art in Jeju and engages with communities nationally and internationally. With the support of the local creative community, the festival hopes of being an annual event which engages and celebrates Jeju’s unique arts sector. In addition to, the festival is to highlight the local culture and connect between overseas and local artists, while being a catalyst for new and experimental arts practice.
